The Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew evolved from the private gardens of the royal palace at Kew, which were laid out in 1759 by the mother of George III. The grounds were landscaped by Capability Brown ( a very busy man)
The curved glass Palm house, completed in 1848 is the distinctive feature, and there are 45,000 species and varieties of plants. Although the prime purpose of the gardens is the study of plants, the shaded walks and floral displays attract many non gardening visitors
