The Romans built a fortress on the banks of the River Ouse at this place, later the Vikings founded a colony, then the Normans built a castle, and later the city obtained prosperity from the wool trade.

The city is built on the original Roman plan, most of the medieval city walls are intact, and one can walk the ramparts for about three miles round the city. Four gates lead through the walls as they did in Roman times.

The crowning glory of the city is York Minster, which took 250 years to build between 1220 and 1470
