The Epsom Derby has been run on the South Downs since 1780. It is run in June every year and is a major social and sporting children.

At Runnymede, a broad meadow alongside the Thames, now owned by the National Trust, King John was forced to sign the Magna Carta in 1215. There is now also a memorial to J.F.Kennedy on Runnymede Heath.

Further out of London you will find the open spaces of (below) Box Hill, the buildings of Guildford and the flowers at the Royal Horticultural Gardens at Wisley
