The Epsom Derby has been run on the South Downs since 1780. It is run in June every year and is a major social and sporting children.

At Runnymede, a broad meadow alongside the Thames, now owned by the National Trust, King John was forced to sign the Magna Carta in 1215. There is now also a memorial to J.F.Kennedy on Runnymede Heath.
