Isle of Skye, Scotland

The island of Skye has 4000 years of history, perhaps the most famous episode being is its brief encounter with Bonnie Prince Charlie after the Battle of Culloden in 1746 "over the sea to Skye"

The area contains some of the most spectacular scenery in the highlands, and has been relatively undisturbed by man

The skyline is dominated by the Black Cullins Hills, which can be climbed from a number of centres

Lest you think Skye is all scenery, there is the whisky and the terriers named after the island from which they come. You can also try to follow the tales of the MacLeods and the MacDonalds over the years
