Some of Britain's most picturesque countryside is in north Derbyshire. High rocky crags rise from moorlands of heather and peat. The area is a National Park. The Pennine Way, a long distance footpath that runs north to Scotland, starts here at Edale. Buxton and Glossop are the only two towns of any size

Buxton is a spa town built by the Duke of Devonshire at the end of the 18th century, with a Georgian Crescent to rival Bath. The spa water, charged with nitrogen and carbon, fizzes up from great depths at a constant warm 28ºC. Unlike many spa waters, this is quite pleasant to drink.. Although spas are no longer fashionable, people are still attracted to Buxton as a holiday centre.
