The country has a number of large hire companies, each with numerous bases for hiring out traditional canal narrow boats. Britain has an extensive network of canals built during the Industrial Revolution. They fell into disuse with the coming of the railways, but are now used almost exclusely for pleasure craft.
There is a large navigable inland waterway box comprising London along the River Thames to Oxford. From there north along canals vis Stratford-upon-Avon to Birmingham, and south via the Grand Union to London.
Off this box are various spurs like the scenic Llangollan Canal.
In addition there are the Norfolk Broads around Norwich, where you can sail comparatively safely on these enclosed inland waters
